Bingo is not right thing for Ferriday

Running a small town’s government means making many tough decisions.
Allowing a video bingo to open and take money from the hands of your residents shouldn’t be one of those decisions.
The fact that the bingo issue is still being debated in Ferriday makes our stomachs turn a bit.
Ferriday — rich in history, characters and good ideas — isn’t exactly rich in dollar signs.
Gambling does little long term good among the rich; it does long term damage among the poor.
The Board of Aldermen managed to get the needed number of votes to approve a resolution backing video gaming several weeks ago.
The magic number was three. One alderman abstained and one voted no.
Having three votes in favor of the resolution is hardly enough to convince us, or the general public, that video bingo is a good idea for the town.
Mayor Glen McGlothin isn’t convinced either; he vetoed the resolution almost as quickly as it was passed.
Now, Alderman Elijah “Steppers” Banks intends to attempt to override McGlothin’s veto, allowing video bingo once and for all.
The passion for the matter from a small group of people is suspicious.
Let’s hope a recount — with no abstentions — keeps the best interest of the people of Ferriday in mind, not the money the town — or someone else — might make on the backs of Ferriday’s citizens.
