NATCHEZ — Catch a glimpse of a variety of Bowie knives or meet with the newest president of Alcorn State University through the coming days in the Miss-Lou.

Sunny skies are forecast through Friday with temperatures reaching the low 90s. Showers and thunderstorms are expected Saturday and Sunday.

Bowie Knife Show

A display of antique knives, guns and other artifacts will be on display at the annual Bowie Knife Show Saturday at the Natchez Convention Center.

Nearly 90 dealer tables are booked for the upcoming show, which aims to bring antiques collectors and knife enthusiasts to the Miss-Lou and the site of Jim Bowie’s infamous sandbar brawl.

Reports of the 1827 fight — in which two men were killed and four men, including Bowie, were wounded — led to a rise in popularity for the large-style knife Bowie used during the altercation.

The first show was at Bowie’s Tavern, and in subsequent years, it has been hosted at the Natchez Convention Center.

The show is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Admission is $5.

Chamber luncheon

The Natchez-Adams County Chamber will host a luncheon focused on education featuring guest speaker Alfred Rankins Jr. today at the Natchez Eola Hotel.

Rankins was named the 19th president of Alcorn State University in March.

Chamber President Debbie Hudson said education is a topic she thinks should be on the forefront of residents’ minds at all times.

“Education is really something that impacts everyone whether they are directly involved or not,” Hudson said. “When we talk about having a good, solid workforce in Natchez, well, our students are the ones will eventually make that up.”

Hudson said it was important for community members to meet with Rankins and hear his plans for Alcorn.

“We need to show support for our educational leaders, and Alcorn is certainly one of our community partners,” Hudson said. “They’re on steady ground right now and poised to do some great things, so everyone in the community should know what’s going on out there because it impacts all of us.”

A reception will be at 11 a.m. followed by lunch at 11:45 a.m.

The cost to attend is $15.

Pigskin and Pearls

Cathedral School will host its third annual Pigskins and Pearls at 6 p.m. today at the school’s cafeteria.

The event is a chance for the women behind the football players and coaches to learn more about the game and meet with head coach Ron Rushing.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door.

Meet the Saints

Trinity Episcopal Day School will host its Meet the Saints program to allow students, parents and community members to meet with various Trinity sports teams.

The event will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Food and drinks will be available.

Kitten and cat adoption day

The Natchez-Adams County Humane Society will host a kitten and cat adoption Friday and Saturday.

Friday’s event will be from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Natchez Mall near the theater entrance, while Saturday’s event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Stine Lumber Company, Tractor Supply Company and the Natchez Mall.
