Vidalia — The Vidalia 16-year-old all-star softball team couldn’t hold on to stay undefeated in the 2013 Southwest Regional Tournament Monday night as they fell 9-6 to Texas West at the Concordia Recreation District 3 Complex.
Vidalia had a 6-5 lead on Texas West in the sixth inning, but seemed to run out of gas in the seventh.
Vidalia allowed Texas West to score four runs in the final inning and run away with the win.
Vidalia head coach Donald Bertelsen said his team’s play got sloppy.
“We started the game pretty well, we just made errors,” Bertelsen said. “We didn’t hit the ball well and if you don’t hit the ball and you commit errors, it’s not a good combination. We were missing balls in the outfield and in the infield that took us out of the game.
“You have to play a clean game. They’ll have to step it up a bit (today).”
Marty Lewis took the loss for Vidalia, she pitched two innings with two runs and one strikeout.
Sarah Sondodal was the winning pitcher for Texas West, pitching all seven innings with three strikeouts.
For Vidalia, Laken Hood went 2-for-4 at the plate, Lewis went 2-for-3 and Katelynn Bertelsen went 2-for-3.
Vidalia will play an elimination game against Texas East at 7 p.m. today at the Concordia Recreation District 3 Complex. Vidalia beat Texas East 3-2 Sunday, and Bertelsen said he feels his team is still in contention to win the tournament.
“It’s a tough loss, but I think we will get together, come back and win this thing,” he said. “I think we can.”
