ALEXANDRIA, La. — Ferriday head coach Lisa Abron knew her talented, yet young, Lady Trojans would take some lumps this season.
And after a 24-point loss to Class 5A Pineville Thursday night at the Peabody Tournament, the Lady Trojans had lost six straight tournament games.
After three quarters of play against another struggling team in Class 4A Alexandria Senior High, it looked it was going to be 0-for-7 in tourney games. That was until Ferriday ramped up the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter that enabled to Lady Trojans to defeat ASH’s Lady Trojans 42-35 Friday night.
“We changed our defense several times. We worked on our press. I think it made a difference in the game,” Abron said. “We forced several turnovers, which led to several easy baskets.”
ASH led Ferriday 11-8 after one quarter of play and still maintained its three-point lead at halftime. Led by Chante Poole and T’Keyah Fletcher, Ferriday (3-7) began its rally in the third quarter when it outscored ASH 11-9 to trail by just one point, 29-28.
Poole scored much of her game-high 23 points in the second half after being held to just 11 points in Thursday night’s loss to Pineville. Fletcher finished with eight points.
Ferriday ended up with a 14-6 advantage over ASH in the final eight minutes. Abron was not only pleased with the defensive effort of her team in the fourth quarter, but also a couple of other things that she felt had been missing.
“We played with some energy and enthusiasm that we haven’t played with in a while,” Abron said.
Ferriday will take on Avoyelles Parish at 10:30 a.m. today in final day of the Peabody Tournament.
Parklane 61, WCCA 55 (OT)
WOODVILLE — Led by Terri Fisher and Caroline Walker, Wilkinson County Christian Academy overcame a 10-point deficit to force overtime against Parklane Academy.
Unfortunately, the Lady Rams ran out of gas in the extra session and lost to the Lady Pioneers by six points Friday night. And had it not been for the performance of Parklane’s Kellen Choate, the outcome would have been much different.
Choate scored nearly half of Parklane’s points by herself as she finished with a game-high 30 points. The Lady Pioneers appeared to be on their way to a blowout win after jumping out to a 19-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
WCCA, however, had other ideas. The Lady Rams got back in the game by outscoring the Lady Pioneers 16-9 in the second quarter to trail by just five points at halftime. And just when it seemed like Parklane was going to pull away again, WCCA once again responded with a 19-9 advantage in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime with the score tied at 52-52.
Fisher led the Lady Rams with 24 points and Walker added 21 points. But it wasn’t enough as Parklane won the game with a 9-3 advantage in overtime.
WCCA (4-9) next plays at Class AA No. 2 Brookhaven Academy at 6 p.m. today.
Franklin County 75, South Pike 35
MAGNOLIA — Four players for Franklin County scored in double figures, led by Allison Hauer’s 13 points as the Lady Bulldogs remained undefeated with a 40-point win over the South Pike Lady Eagles Friday night.
Vintrice Briggs, Kierra Collins and Briana Grayson scored 11 points each for Franklin County, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A. But that wasn’t the only thing Lady Bulldogs head coach Charles Moore was happy about.
“We had really great bench play tonight. We put pressure defensively because our bench played so well. We only played our starters for (part of) the first half,” Moore said. “Eleven girls in the scoring column means we were able to distribute the ball extremely well.”
Franklin County (8-0) took a 16-7 lead after one quarter of play and then led South Pike at halftime 33-20. The Lady Bulldogs extended their lead to 20 points at the end of the third quarter before holding the Lady Eagles to just four points in the fourth quarter.
“Second half we played defense extremely well. We hit four 3s in the second half,” Moore said.
South Pike was led by P. Weatherspoon and J. Carter with 13 points apiece.
The Lady Bulldogs don’t play again until next Friday when they host
Trinity Episcopal 44, Tensas Academy 15
ST. JOSEPH, La. — For much of the past decade, Trinity Episcopal and Tensas Academy had some good games against each other and the match-ups over the years usually featured some of the best players in the MPSA/MAIS.
That would not be the case Friday night. At least not for Tensas Academy, which is going through a transition period with a new head coach and a young team. As for Trinity Episcopal, well, the Lady Saints just keep on winning — as in eight in a row.
Bethany Ogden led all scorers with 19 points, and Madelyn Cross had nine points as the No. 2 team in all of Class A shut out the Lady Chiefs in the first quarter and likely could have won their MAIS District 6-A opener by more than the 29 points.
By the time the first quarter was finally over, Trinity Episcopal had an 18-0 lead. And the first eight minutes could not have ended soon enough for Tensas Academy. At halftime, the Lady Saints enjoyed a commanding 27-4 lead.
Sydney Lee led the Lady Chiefs with nine points.
Trinity Episcopal (8-3, 1-0) hosts Silliman Institute at 3:30 p.m. today.
