CENTREVILLE — Trinity Episcopal’s varsity softball team started the 2014 season with an impressive showing at the Centreville Academy Tournament as the Lady Saints won two of their three games.

In its first game of the day, Trinity Episcopal used a three-run rally in the bottom of the fourth inning to defeat the host Centreville Academy Lady Tigers 6-4 in a four-inning contest. Michaela Hutchins pitched two innings of shutout, no-hit ball with one strikeout and two walks to get the win.

Kayla Gilmore had a big game at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and three runs batted in. Centreville was led by Kaitlyn Bell, who went 2-for-3.

Surprisingly, Centreville was the visiting team in this game on its own field. After Trinity scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-1 lead, the Lady Tigers answered with three runs of their own in the top of the second inning off starting pitcher Kailey Hutchins for a 4-3 lead.

Kailey Hutchins gave up four runs, only one of them earned, on two hits and one walk to go with two strikeouts. Michaela Hutchins also had two RBIs and Tali Beard has one RBI for Trinity.

The second game did not turn out as well for the Lady Saints as they lost to the Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels 8-5 in a three-inning game.

ACCS scored all eight of its runs in the bottom of the first inning. Despite being held to just two hits in the game, Trinity put up a valiant effort in the top of the third inning but came up a few runs short.

Brooke Runnels was the winning pitcher for ACCS while Beard was charged with the loss for Trinity.

Trinity’s third game of the day was probably produced the upset of the entire tournament as the Lady Saints stunned defending MAIS Class A state champion and District 7-A opponent Franklin Academy 3-0 in a four-inning game.

Kailey Hutchins went the distance and held the Lady Cougars to just one hit. She also struck out one and walked two. The Lady Saints scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and one run in the bottom of the second. Gilmore had an RBI double in the bottom of the first.

Trinity Episcopal (2-1) next plays at 5 p.m. Thursday at Brookhaven Academy.

The Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels also went 2-1 at the Centreville Tournament. The day started with a 7-2 loss to Franklin Academy in a four-inning game and ended with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Centreville in a game that went six innings.

Franklin Academy scored six runs in the top of the first inning and led 7-0 before ACCS scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Jesslyn Jarrett was the winning pitcher for the Lady Cougars, who got a home run from Tyler Robinson and a double by Jarrett.

Ashleigh Williams was the losing pitcher and Michaela Ashley had a double for the Lady Rebels.

In the win over Centreville, ACCS scored one run each in the bottom of the second and third innings before the Lady Tigers scored one run in the top of the fifth inning. The Lady Rebels scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth. Centreville scored one run in the top of the sixth, but that would be it.

Brooke Runnels was the winning pitcher and Brianna Henson had a double for the Lady Rebels.

ACCS (3-1) next plays at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Tensas Academy.

Unfortunately, it was not a good day for the host Centreville Academy Lady Tigers. In addition to their losses to Trinity Episcopal and ACCS, they also fell to Franklin Academy 3-0.

The Lady Cougars scored one run in the top of the first inning and two in the top of the fourth. Kassie Shipley pitched a three-hitter to get the win. Raleigh Allen took the loss despite also throwing a three-hitter. Amber Easterling had a double for the winning team.

Centreville Academy (0-4) plays again at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at ACCS.
