Weekend Ticket: Movie premiere, jubilee on deck for weekend ahead

NATCHEZ — Enjoy a glimpse of Hollywood, some old fashioned lemonade or a taste of other events happening during a jam-packed weekend in the Miss-Lou.

Skies will be partly cloudy until Sunday when a slight chance of thunderstorms will threaten the area, and high temperatures will reach the low 90s.

‘Get On Up’ Movie Premiere

Whether you have a ticket for the premiere or not, come out to the Natchez movie theatre behind the Natchez Mall for the premiere of “Get On Up,” a movie filmed largely in and around Natchez.

Chadwick Boseman, who portrays James Brown in the film, and director Tate Taylor will be walking the red carpet along with community members who scored a ticket.

A spectator area will be set up for those without a ticket to still take part in the festivities.

Boseman and Taylor are expected to arrive at the theatre around 6:30 p.m. Saturday before the screening of the movie.

Food and Wine Festival 

Enjoy food and wine from across the South this weekend at the 14th annual Food and Wine Festival.

The emcee for the festival’s first event on Friday at the Natchez Convention Center will be Louisiana chef and restaurant owner John Folse.

He will also host a luncheon and meal presentation at Rolling River Bistro Saturday.

Other events throughout the weekend will feature chefs from restaurants across the south.

Minorville Jubilee

Join the Minorville community in a celebration of their history on Saturday.

Food, friends and good times await from 9:30 a.m. until the midafternoon.

There will be a march starting at 9:30 a.m. from the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. and Minor streets, followed by a gospel hour at Macedonia Baptist Church.

In the afternoon, activities include basketball, a barbeque and a fire hydrant being opened to cool everyone off in the afternoon heat.

Board of Alderman Tony Fields invited the community to come out and have a good time.

“I’ve been going since I was a kid,” Fields said. “It’s a good time that advocates unity for our community and to really celebrate how far we have come.”

There is no admission fee to participate.

Ducks Unlimited State 

Convention

The Ducks Unlimited State Convention will come to Natchez this Friday to host a variety of events through Saturday.

At 6 p.m. Friday, Ducks Unlimited with host a fish fry, followed by duck bingo and a beanbag-tossing tournament at the Natchez Convention Center.

At 6 p.m. Saturday, a dinner banquet and live auction are on the agenda.

Awards will be given and auctions will take place.

There is a registration fee of $100 or $35 for students.

Mae and Friends’ Lemonade Stand

Enjoy a cool glass of lemonade while helping the furry friends of Adams County at the same time.

Mae and Friends will set up their seventh annual lemonade stand in front of the Natchez Convention Center Friday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The stand will offer lemonade, cookies and t-shirts, and all proceeds will go to the Natchez-  Adams County Humane Society.

Lemonade and cookies are each $1 and T-shirts are $15.

Characters for a Cure

Bring out the kids to meet their favorite Disney characters, while helping support cancer research.

Cinderella, Mickey Mouse, Tinker Bell, Buzz Lightyear and other Disney favorites will be available to take photos with during the First Baptist church’s “Characters for a Cure” event in the church gym Saturday.

Refreshments, photo opts and Disney clips will be provided by the First Baptist Church Relay for Life team at the event from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1:30 to 3 p.m.

Relay for Life team member Bettye Lindeman hopes for a good turn out based on the success of last year’s event.

“I want the kids to get excited,” Lindeman said. “I think it will be really exciting for the children to experience something so like Disney World here in Natchez.”

Kitten and Cat Adoption

The Natchez-Adams County Humane Society will host a kitten and cat adoption Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

You can find your newest friend at the Natchez Mall theater entrance or Stine.

Adopt two cats or kittens for $35 or one for $35.

The adoption fee includes spaying or neutering.
