WESSON — The Cathedral Green Wave have been hard-pressed to catch a break this season, losing four excruciatingly close games.

But that changed Saturday against Wesson, as the Green Wave overcame a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit to win 59-57.

Russell Goodman’s offensive rebound and putback at the buzzer gave the Green Wave the dramatic victory.

“Every game we’ve lost has been really close,” Cathedral head coach Peter Arnold said. “We needed something good to happen, and it finally did.”

Cathedral (5-5) entered the fourth quarter trailing 51-36, but switched to a full-court man defense, which paid dividends.

Wesson scored just six points in the fourth quarter, compared to the Green Wave’s 23.

Collin Hammons tied the score at 57 with a basket with 28 seconds left, and Cathedral then got a quick steal after the Wesson inbounds pass.

After running the clock down to under 10 seconds, Hammond fired up a shot that missed. However, Goodman was able to grab the offensive rebound and scored right as the buzzer sounded.

“There wasn’t hardly a tenth of a second left when he let the ball go,” Arnold said. “Defensively we shut them down (in the fourth quarter), and we finally got a shot to fall when we needed to.”

Daniel Huffines led Cathedral with 16 points while Hammons scored 13 and D.J. Perry added eight.

Wesson was led by Gib Britt with 17 points and D.J. Coleman with 15.

Centreville 20

NATCHEZ — The Trinity Episcopal Saints basketball team is turning out to be just as dominant as the football team — at least so far.

The Saints routed another opponent on Saturday, mauling Centreville Academy 57-20.

Trinity, which improved to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in District 6-A, led 18-2 after the first quarter and held a 40-12 halftime lead.

L.J. Trimble and Givonni Dent led the Saints with 11 points each while Kent King scored eight.

Centreville was led by Corey Gauldin with seven points.

NATCHEZ — Trinity’s Bethany Ogden had the game of her life on Saturday, as she scored 35 points and grabbed 19 rebounds to lead the Lady Saints past Centreville 65-36.

Ogden scored 20 of her points in the first quarter, as Trinity jumped out to a 29-5 lead after the first eight minutes.

Ogden’s scoring pace slowed down after that as the Lady Saints took their foot off the accelerator and cruised to the victory.

Madelyn Cross also scored in double figures for the Lady Saints, chipping in 15 points.

Trinity improved to 11-3 overall and 2-0 in district play.

Centreville was led by Katie Berry with 20 points.
