NATCHEZ — A Natchez man who was allegedly shot twice in the chest by his wife last week over an argument about bills remains in a Jackson hospital, Sheriff Chuck Mayfield said Monday.

Mayfield said officials from Natchez Regional Medical Center called sheriff’s office at 12:32 p.m. Wednesday to report gunshot wounds.

When deputies arrived at the hospital, nurses told them the victim, Cain Harris, 60, was sedated with two gunshot wounds to his chest, Mayfield said.

Harris’s wife, Audery C. Harris, was being held in an observation room, where she complained of chest pains, dizziness and nausea.

Audery told deputies she shot her husband when they were arguing over bills. She was later arrested for aggravated assault.

She reported that the argument began to simmer until one of them discovered a delinquent house payment notice in the mail.

The argument intensified until Audrey left their house at 1355 Martin Luther King Jr. Road and went to Walmart.

When she returned, they began fighting again and Audrey said she grabbed the gun in the bedroom for protection.

She reportedly said when her husband came toward her she shot him. She shot him again when he tried to wrestle the gun from her, Mayfield said.

Mayfield said Audrey then began to bite her husband and the fight moved outside.

Once outside, Audrey asked her husband to allow her to bring him to the hospital.

Cain’s brother and his sister-in-law showed up shortly after and drove the victim and suspect to the hospital.

A helicopter airlifted the victim to a Jackson hospital, where Cain remained as of Friday, Mayfield said. He said he believes the victim is still alive, but he is unsure of his condition.

The victim’s wife fired the shots from an 38-caliber pistol. Audrey C. Harris, 59, 1355 Martin Luther King Jr. Road, was charged with aggravated assault. She was released on a verbal $25,000 property bond per Justice Court Judge Charlie Vess the day of the incident.

Multiple calls to Mayfield about this incident on Thursday and Friday were not returned.
