No word on new ASU coach

LORMAN — Braves fans wondering who Alcorn State’s new head football coach is going to be will have to show some patience.
A week after former head coach Earnest Collins left the Braves to coach at his alma mater Northern Colorado, ASU Sports Information Director Augustus Howard said there was no news in the school’s coaching search.
Despite earlier reports that ASU President Dr. Norris Edney would form a search committee Tuesday, Howard said such a committee was never put together.
“(Edney) may make the decision himself,” Howard said.
In a statement released by the university last week, Edney said he didn’t have a list of possible candidates at that time.
“I don’t have a list at all. Those interest now can apply, as soon as possible,” Edney said in the statement.
A popular choice among some Alcornites is current Alabama State offensive coordinator Melvin Spears, who played at Alcorn while he was in college. But Howard said Wednesday that Spears has not been contacted about the job.
“We haven’t contacted anyone yet,” Howard said.
Brenda Glenn, Alabama State’s football secretary, said she was unaware of any interest in Spears on Alcorn’s part.
“The only thing I can tell you is, coach Spears is out on the road right now recruiting,” Glenn said.
