NATCHEZ — It was a split decision at Adams County Christian Thursday night, with the Lady Rebels soaring and the boys leaving frustrated.

ACCS hosted Canton Academy, and the varsity girls took care of business with a convincing 58-17 win. But Canton Academy’s boy struck back with a 64-26 victory over the Rebels.

Lady Rebels head coach Melanie Hall said her team was able to play to its strengths in the lopsided victory Thursday.

“Our defensive intensity sparked everything else,” Hall said. “We were able to run the floor, and we were better with our layups and free throws tonight.

“It was a great team effort, and every player contributed. As always, to God be the glory.”

The Lady Rebels’ dominance was evident early on, when ACCS jumped out to a 15-4 lead after the first quarter.

Taylor Welch began turning up her game in the second quarter, scoring 10 of the Lady Rebels’ 20 points during that period. ACCS led 35-11 at intermission.

In the third quarter, Welch hit a three-pointer and a field goal to finish with 15 points on the night, and led in scoring for ACCS. ACCS held Canton to just six points in the third quarter and no points in the fourth.

Abbey Givens finished with 11 points for the Lady Rebels, and freshman Brandis White tallied 10 points. The starters were pulled in the fourth quarter to give the backups some playing time.

“You see their smiles? They had fun tonight, and that’s what it’s all about,” Hall said.

The Lady Rebels are now 14-3 on the season.

Canton boys 64,

ACCS 26

The ACCS boys didn’t have quite as much fun as the girls did, with Canton jumping out to an early lead, which the Rebels never threatened.

ACCS had trouble snatching rebounds all night, and ACCS boys head coach Rick Fife said the Rebels’ zone defense didn’t do much to stop Canton.

“We didn’t rebound well, and they got easy points out of our zone defense,” Fife said. “We felt we had to stick with it because of the speed factor, and they took us out of our half-court offense.”

ACCS’ lone bright spot in scoring was Daniel Guedon, who tallied 14 of the Rebels’ 26 points. Every other player finished with just two points.

“Daniel played well for us at times, and made some big shots,” Fife said. “The downside is, he played a lot of minutes.”

ACCS fell to 8-8 on the season. The Rebels will travel to Centreville Saturday for both the boys’ and girls’ first district games.
