NATCHEZ — While some will spend their Memorial Day Weekend around the barbecue pit, Caleb Upton will spend the next few days on the baseball diamond.
The Natchez native and former Cathedral High School standout will be playing in the JUCO World Series at 7 p.m. today as No. 7 Hinds Community College takes on No. 5 Lincoln Land Community College in Enid, Okla.
Upton helped his team become the winners of the South region as one of the Eagles’ leaders in RBIs.
He currently has 42 RBIs this season, only behind Chase Lunceford with 43.
Upton also has a .316 batting average with 10 doubles and six home runs.
The Eagles reached the World Series after defeating the No. 1-ranked Jones County Junior College twice, and No. 2-ranked Louisiana State University-Eunice in the Region XXIII tournament in Ellisville last weekend.
Hinds started the season on a with a 4-8 overall record, but changed their season around right before the South division play.
If the Eagles win Saturday night, they won’t play again until noon on Monday. But if they lose, they will have to play at 7 p.m. Sunday.
