NATCHEZ — Natchez Police Department officers arrested a man for allegedly burglarizing a store Monday morning, and evidence later reportedly connected him to the burglary of another business from two days earlier.
Police Chief Mike Mullins said officers responded to an alarm Monday a 1:40 a.m. coming from a storehouse on the 100-block of Lower Woodville Road.
Once officers were on the scene and noticed the store had been broken into and cigarettes and other merchandise were missing, they the saw the suspect, Jermier Rashard Benton, 23, 2743 Miller Ave, outside.
Officers chased Benton to a nearby bayou, where they placed him under arrest. Police recovered stolen cigarettes and gloves from the suspect that were apparently stolen from the Lower Woodville business, Mullins said.
An investigation revealed Benton also broke in and stole items from a business in the 600 block of Franklin Street two days earlier.
Mullins did not give the names the business burglarized. He said officers responded to the burglary on Franklin Street at 4:50 a.m. when an alarm was activated.
The suspect apparently broke in the front door of the Franklin Street business and stole a rifle and a canvas bag.
“(The police department) is investigating the possibility of other burglaries,” Mullins said.
Benton was also charged with a bench warrant for domestic violence/simple assault after he was booked for the two counts of burglary of a storehouse.
The bench warrant is associated with the suspect’s alleged failure to comply with court orders relating to a November 2010 charge.
