JACKSON — Centreville Academy’s varsity boys’ track team overtook Adams County Christian School in the running events to win the MAIS Class AA state championship at the 2014 MAIS Overall Class Track Meet Saturday at Jackson Preparatory School.

Even though ACCS was not able to hold off a strong Centreville team after having the lead from Friday’s field events, head coach David King said the program’s immediate future looks quite strong.

“State runner-up, that’s not bad. We’ve got everybody back (next year),” King said. “So it ought to be good times ahead.”

Centreville Academy finished with 138.5 points, while ACCS ended up tied for second place with Silliman Institute with 94 points.

ACCS’s relay team of Trey Fleming, Lester Wells, Richard Conn and Sammy Butler came in second in the 800-meter relay. The team of Butler, Chisum Mardis, Trey Fleming and Wells finished third in the 400-meter relay. The team of Trey Fleming, Wells, Mardis and Jalen Fleming finished fourth in the 1600-meter relay.

In the 300-meter hurdles, Trey Fleming won the event and Tyler Stockstill was fourth. Stockstill was third in the 110-meter hurdles. Butler finished sixth in the 200-meter dash.

“I’m very proud of them. It’s a young team,” King said. “We feel like we’ve got a good, good track program.”

Sarah Clancy was the only member of ACCS’s girls’ track team to participate in any running events. a Clancy finished in the third place with a personal best time of 12:42.61 in the 3200-meter run, fourth in the 1600-meter run, and fifth in the 800-meter run.

“She did very well today,” ACCS girls’ track head coach Dee Ray said.

As for how her team did over this two-day meet, Ray said, “I think they performed very well. With not many qualifying, they did very well. They had some personal bests.”

ACCS’s girls team ended up tied for seventh with 37 points while Centreville Academy came in second with 84 points.

Trinity Episcopal’s boys’ track team also had a good day with several first-place finishes. Unfortunately, not having enough runners kept Trinity Episcopal with a third-place finish in the Class A team standings behind champion Mt. Salus Christian School (121 points) and runner-up DeSoto School (86 points). Trinity finished with 78 points.

“We had a pretty good day considering we only had five runners,” Trinity head track coach Curtis Moroney said. “We finished well, but the other schools were running up points. Third place, that’s not too bad.”

Arzell McCoy blew away the competition in winning the 300-meter hurdles and set a new record for all classifications in that event with a time of 38.63 seconds. He also won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.76, which set a new record in Class A and was about one-tenth of a second from setting and MAIS all-classifications record in that event.

Trinity’s relay team of Cade Wells, Quinton Logan, Tommy McCoy and Arzell McCoy easily won two events — the 4×200 meter relay in a time of 1:32.97 and the 4×400 meter relay in a time of 3:42.71.

Wells finished third in the 200-meter dash and fourth in the 100-meter dash. Hunter Yarbrough came in eighth in the 3,200-meter run.
