JACKSON — Several area athletes are representing Natchez at state championship meets and tournaments in Jackson this weekend, and some have already come out as state champions.

In the MAIS Class AA State Field Championship at Jackson Academy, Adams County Christian School started the meet off right with three state champions.

Lester Wells won the long jump with a distance of 22 feet and two inches and the high jump with a height of six feet, six inches and Ashleigh Williams won the discus with a distance of 113 feet. Jaylen Fleming took home the triple jump state championship with a distance of 42.6 inches.

ACCS boys assistant track coach Matthew Freeman said it felt good to see his athletes compete on such a high level.

“We just went up there (Friday) and the kids took a good attitude with them and did the best they could, and we ended up coming up on top in a couple of events,” Freeman said. “That will give them a good attitude for (track events today). I feel like we put ourselves in a position to make a run at it (today).”

Girls track head coach Dee Ray said Williams, Skylar Adams and Anna McDaniel did their personal best in their respective events Friday, and she is confident Sarah Clancy may set a personal best today in the track events.

“She has been preparing all week, and she’s ready to run,” Ray said

For Trinity at the MAIS Class A State Field Championship at Jackson Academy, Tommy McCoy won the triple jump with a distance of 44.11 and three-fourth inches and Arzell McCoy won the high jump with a height of six feet, six inches.

Trinity track coach Curtis Moroney said the three-fourths of an inch Tommy McCoy leaped in the triple jump made the difference between first and second place, and the momentum from the jump could carry over to today.

“It was a pretty good start for us. Out of Tommy and Arzell, we got two first place and a fifth place, so we got some good points (totaled),” Moroney said. “We’re in pretty good shape right now, and we should do pretty well in the running events (today).

“I expect Cade Wells to do well in the 100 and 200-meter events (today). (Hunter Yarbrough) will run the 3,200-meter, there are a couple guys in there (with times) pretty close, so it could be a race.”

The track events for the MAIS Class A and Class AA will begin at 10 am. at Jackson Prep Academy today.
