Lumberton — The Cathedral High School baseball team defeated Lumberton High School 10-0 in six innings to take a 1-0 series lead in the second round of the MHSAA Class 1A South State playoffs.

Going 4-for-4 with a triple, Pate Shirley led the Green Wave, in a collective 13-hit performance.

“I thought tonight was one of the best offensive game we’ve had in a very long time,” head coach Craig Beesley said.

Defensively, minus three errors on Cathedral’s part, Thomas Garrity shut down Lumberton’s offense, allowing only one hit and no runs.

“Thomas had a great game,” Beesley said. “He swung the bat well tonight and set the tone on the mound.”

Leading 1-0 in the top of the third inning, Jacob Jenkins led off the inning with a single. After an Andrew Beesley single, Ty Brown scored Jenkins on a sacrifice fly. A crucial error by Lumberton’s third baseman tacked on two more for the Green Wave, which led to a four-run inning for Cathedral.

“We played aggressive on the bases tonight,” Beesley said.

Garrity remained consistent, limiting any production out of Lumberton before Cathedral erupted for four runs in the sixth inning with Shirley’s 3-RBI triple, giving Cathedral a 10-0 lead and eventual victory.

The Green Wave will play Lumberton again at 6 p.m. tonight at Chester Willis Field.

Franklin County 0, Sumrall 10

SUMRALL — Sumrall took a 1-0 series lead against Franklin County in a 10-0 victory through five innings.

Nick Clark led Sumrall in hitting with three hits and also picked up the victory, striking out seven through five innings.

The second game between Sumrall and Franklin County will take place at 7 p.m. today in Franklin County.

Block 0, Mangham 5

MANGHAM — Multiple walks and an inefficiency to gain timely hits with runners in scoring position led to the Block Bears elimination in the playoffs Thursday night.

In a 5-0 defeat to Mangham, the Bears committed four errors and collected four total hits.

Landon Hammons was the winning pitcher for Mangham and Taylor Terron-Kraese received the loss for Block.

The Bears finished their season with an 11-13 record.

John Curtis 15, Vidalia 0

NEW ORLEANS — The Vidalia Vikings were shutout 15-0 against No. 1 seed John Curtis in a 10-run rule defeat through five innings.

The Vikings finished their season with a 13-10 record.
