SEMINARY — Franklin County was on its way to facing a one-game-to-none deficit to Seminary before going on a four-run rally in the top of the seventh inning as the visiting Lady Bulldogs defeated the host Lady Bulldogs 6-4 Monday afternoon in the second round of the MHSAA Class 3A South State Playoffs.
Seminary starting pitcher Sarah Dickens pitched six strong innings and kept Franklin County’s batters confused. She had only allowed a single run in both the top of the third inning and the top of the fourth inning over that span and took a 4-2 lead into the seventh inning.
That was until Franklin County finally put some hits together to take an amazing come-from-behind victory. Shelby Smith went 2-for-3 with a triple and one run batted in and Jamecia Starks was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs. Krislyn Kent and Hayle McKinney each had a double.
Harley McKay went the distance and allowed four runs, all earned, on four hits with two strikeouts, three walks and one hit batter in picking up the win. Three of Seminary’s hits were triples by Jesse Smith, Lynlee Walters and Paige Walters.
Seminary got off to a good start, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second inning and two more runs in the bottom of the third. But McKay would not allow another run in the final four innings and that kept Franklin County in the game.
Dickens suffered the loss after allowing six runs, all earned, on eight hits, one walk and one hit batter with two strikeouts.
Franklin County (13-7) hosts Seminary for Game 2 of the best-of-three series 5:30 p.m. today. If there is a third and deciding game, it will take place after the conclusion of Game 2.
Cathedral Postponed
NATCHEZ — The threat of severe weather Monday afternoon forced the second round of the MHSAA Class 1A South State Tournament’s best-of-three series between Cathedral and Sebastopol to be postponed.
Game one, which was scheduled for Monday, will now take place 5 p.m. today at Cathedral. Game two has been pushed back from today to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Sebastopol. Game three, if necessary, will take place after the completion of Game 2.
