VIDALIA — Cole Cangemi had a solid complete-game performance on the mound while Tyler Sandifer and Dylan Parnham had timely hits for Vidalia in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Vikings defeated the Avoyelles Mustangs 10-3 Tuesday afternoon in an LHSAA District 3-3A game.
This was a must-win game for Vidalia as the Vikings were still on the outside looking for a postseason berth at the No. 33 spot in the most recent Class 3A power rankings. And the home team did not take long to overcome a quick 1-0 deficit by scoring 10 straight runs.
Cangemi allowed three runs, all earned, on seven hits and five walks to go with six strikeouts. He pitched five straights scoreless innings after allowing one run in the top of the first. And the defense behind him came through in a big way with no errors.
The Vikings gave him plenty of run support over the first four innings. They scored two runs in the bottom of the first and second innings to go ahead 4-1 and then put the game out of reach with five runs in the bottom of the fourth, which included a two-run triple by Sandifer and a two-run double from Parnham.
William Handjis went 3-for-4 with an RBI triple in the bottom of the second inning. Kyle Coley went 3-for-4, Josh Foucher was 2-for-3 with a double and Cangemi was 2-for-4.
Avoyelles trailed 10-1 before scoring two runs in the top of the seventh inning. One of those runs came in on a double by Danny Edmonds.
Vidalia (12-9, 5-4) plays at Avoyelles to close out the regular season at 5 p.m. Thursday.
