MONTEREY — Tiffany Weeks and Bailey Book combined to go 4-for-5 with run-scoring hits in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Monterey Lady Wolves took care of the Evans Lady Eagles 15-0 in four innings Tuesday afternoon in the bi-district round of the LHSAA Class B Playoffs.

Weeks went 2-for-3 with a triple that scored one run in the bottom of the fourth inning, as well as a double. Book went 2-for-2, hitting two doubles with the second of which scoring what turned out to be game-ending run in the bottom of the fourth that enforced the 15-run-after-four-innings mercy rule.

Monterey, the No. 6 seed and District 6-B champion, scored at least two runs in each of the four innings to eliminate Evans, the No. 27 seed. The Lady Wolves had a 7-0 lead after three innings of play before going on a tear with eight runs in the fourth.

Paige Bryan pitched a complete game and held the Lady Eagles to just three singles, struck out eight batters and walked none. Jody Duncan had a double and Karlee Woodruff went 2-for-4 for the Lady Wolves, who also took advantage of seven Lady Eagles errors.

Monterey (14-7) will host No. 11 seed Choudrant in a regional round game at 4 p.m. Friday.

Block 11, Metairie Park Country Day 1

JONESVILLE — Micahla Hughes limited Metairie Park Country Day to one earned run on three hits, while Lakiscia Bowman and Lexi Hatten both went 2-for-2 as the Block Lady Bears defeated the Lady Cajuns 11-1 in six innings Tuesday afternoon in an LHSAA Class 1A bi-district round game.

Hughes kept Country Day, the No. 26 seed, off the scoreboard until the top of the fifth inning. And by that time, No. 7 seed Block already had a commanding 7-0 lead. Hughes pitched all six innings, struck out three and walked three.

The Lady Bears scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning, four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and two runs each in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings. Laken Hood was 2-for-4 for the home team.

Block (16-8) will host No. 10 seed St. John in a regional round game at 4 p.m. Friday.

Vidalia 9, Jewel Sumner 5

KENTWOOD, La. — Katelin Temple hit a key two-run double in the top of the fifth inning as the 17th-seeded Vidalia Lady Vikings needed two rallies to defeat the 16th-seeded Jewel Sumner Cowgirls 9-5 Tuesday afternoon in the bi-district round of the LHSAA Class 3A Playoffs.

Temple’s hit broke a 5-5 tie and gave Vidalia the lead for good. The Lady Vikings were down 2-0 after one inning of play before going on a four-run rally in the top of the third inning for the first lead of the game. But Jewel Sumner rallied itself to take a 5-4 lead heading into the top of the fifth.

Cowgirls’ starting pitcher Kristie Sanchez gave upthree runs in the top of the fifth. Vidalia then scored two runs off her in the top of the seventh. Sanchez went the distance and gave up nine runs, seven earned.

Lady Vikings starting pitcher Taylor Rodgers also pitched a complete game, but she allowed only five runs, only two earned, on six hits to go with 10 strikeouts and just two walks. She also helped her cause by going 3-for-3 at the plate.

Katelynn Bertelsen went 2-for-3 with two doubles and one RBI. Megan Naquin was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Temple ended up with three RBIs.

Vidalia (13-10) hosts No. 1 seed John Curtis at 5 p.m. Friday in a regional round game.

Franklin County 11, McComb 1

MEADVILLE — Sierra Bethley and Krislyn Kent both went 2-for-3 with one run batted in as the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs wrapped up the regular season with an 11-1 win over the McComb Lady Tigers in five innings Tuesday night.

Franklin County broke a scoreless game with a nine-run rally in the bottom of the third inning and finished the game early with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Harley McKay went all five innings and allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out seven batters and she went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

McComb scored its only run off McKay in the top of the fourth inning. The Lady Tigers not only had issues dealing with McKay when they were at bat, but they also had their share of difficulties fielding the ball when the Lady Bulldogs were at bat and ended up committing seven errors.

Franklin County (12-7) will have to wait until next Monday to start its postseason when it takes on the winner of the Prentiss/Seminary series in the second round of the MHSAA Class 3A South State Playoffs.

Loyd Star 13, Cathedral 3

BROOKHAVEN — Ali Gartman hit two home runs and went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead the Loyd Star Lady Hornets to a 13-3 win over the Cathedral Lady Green Wave in five innings Tuesday afternoon.

Gartman was the only player for either team to have any extra base hits and was the only multiple hitter for either team. And had it not been for a nine-run rally in the bottom of the first inning by Loyd Star that erased a 1-0 Cathedral lead, this would have been a close ball game.

Kelsey McCullough was the winning pitcher for the Lady Hornets while Emily Rasco was charged with the loss for the Lady Green Wave.

Cathedral (5-9) hosts Noxapater at 4:30 p.m. Thursday for Game 1 of an MHSAA Class 3A South State Play-In Round best-of-three series.
