NATCHEZ — Miss-Lou residents can enjoy a variety of events planned this weekend all with sunny skies above them.

Temperatures are expected to warm up throughout the weekend with highs in the low 80s by Saturday.

Friday forum

This week’s topic includes representatives from the Natchez-Adams School District discussing the Common Core State Standards, a community reading project and upcoming restructuring changes to the district.

The weekly forum begins at 8 a.m. at Natchez Coffee Company.

Chamber Golf/Tennis Tournament

The Natchez-Adams County Chamber of Commerce Golf/Tennis Tournament will tee off Friday with those participating having the opportunity to win a 2014 Chevy Impala, 2015 GMC Yukon and a vacation for four at the Lajitas Golf Resort and Spa in Texas.

The day’s activities will begin with registration at 10 a.m. for tennis, 11 a.m. for golfers, lunch at 11:30 a.m. and play starting at 1 p.m.

A helicopter ball drop will also take place at 6 p.m. A ball drop ticket may be purchased for $20.

The tennis mixed doubles and women’s doubles will feature two sets and a 10-point tiebreaker. A $30 registration fee is required to enter the mixed doubles or women’s doubles tennis tournament.

AARP smart driver course

The Vidalia Library will host an AARP smart driver course from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the library, which is located at 408 Texas St.

The class will update residents’ driving knowledge and can provide possible insurance discounts for those 50 and older.

Flower arranging workshop

The Pilgrimage Garden Club will host a junior gardeners’ flower arranging workshop and an adult flower arranging workshop beginning at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Queens Room of the Carriage House.

The workshop will feature Pam Harriss and Anne Harriss, and junior gardeners are encouraged to bring their container and scissors.

The junior gardeners will be from 3:30 to 5:15 p.m.

The adult class will be from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m.

Easter egg hunt and art walk

The Natchez Downtown Development Association’s 2nd Saturday Committee members and volunteers will hide 1,000 eggs filled with stickers and candy at the annual Easter egg hunt at 11 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Park.

Children are asked to bring their Easter baskets and meet at the South Union Street entrance of Memorial Park, which is located behind St. Mary Basilica.

Children will be divided into three age groups — 2 and 3 year olds; 4, 5 and 6 year olds; and 7, 8 and 9 year olds — and guided to their search areas.

NDDA spokeswoman Yvonne Murray said the event is a great chance to get more people downtown.

“We’re trying to do more things for the children, because we feel like it will help bring more adults downtown to see what’s going on,” Murray said. “Last year, we had it on the bluff and we didn’t realize how there aren’t many places to hide eggs.”

Murray said Memorial Park has provided a better landscape for hiding eggs for those seeking the treasures.

“We hope we can hide the eggs better, and we can also have volunteers at each entrance to make sure people don’t come in early before the hunt,” Murray said. “In just minutes, all the eggs were found so we’re hoping we can make it last longer this year.”

Later that evening from 6 to 8 p.m., NDDA will also host a “2nd Saturday Art Walk.”

Six galleries will be open downtown with special exhibits, including Ashley Goodwyn, a modernist sculptor, who will set up at Lanneau’s building at 421 Main St.

Kitten adoption day

The Natchez-Adams County Humane Society will host a kitten adoption day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Stine Lumber on U.S. 61.

The price of adopting an animal — $35 for two kittens — incudes spaying and neutering costs.

Passover Seder Supper

Rabbi Marshall Klaven and the congregation of Temple B’Nai Israel will host a Passover Seder Supper at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Temple, located at 213 S. Commerce St.

A $25 donation is requested for the meal, which will include traditional Jewish foods, such as matzo ball soup.

Temple member Elise Rushing, who helps cook the meal each year, said the event is an important fundraiser for the temple and its congregation.

“Really, we just try to break even each year, but any additional funds go back into the Temple,” Rushing said.
