NATCHEZ — One man is in the hospital after a Friday evening brawl near the Natchez Youth Center resulted in gunfire.

Natchez Police Department Detective Jerry Ford said one man was shot in the leg after he reportedly tried to break up a fight involving a friend at approximately 5:30 p.m. Friday at the youth center on Triumph Lane.

Ford said the fight reportedly stemmed from an ongoing feud among the group of men who were fighting.

Ford said he does not know the reason for the feud but said the men had reportedly agreed to meet at the youth center to “settle their differences by fighting.”

The victim reported he was trying to break up the fight when someone came up behind him and shot him in the leg.

That account, however, is inconsistent with the victim’s wound, which suggests the bullet entered his leg from the front, Ford said.

“That’s something I am trying to figure out now,” he said. “But from what (the victim) is telling me, someone came up behind him and shot him.”

The victim is recovering from the gunshot at Natchez Regional Medical Center. His injuries are not life-threatening, Ford said.

Anyone with information about the shooting should call Crime Stoppers at 601-442-5000.

Crime Stoppers offers a reward of up to $1,000 for a tip leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect.
