JENA, La. — Charlie Smith pitched a complete-game three-hitter for Jena and Jordan Tannehill’s two-run double highlighted a six-run rally in the bottom of the first inning as the Giants defeated the Block Bears 13-1 in five innings Saturday afternoon.

Smith allowed one unearned run in the top of the first inning and nothing after that. He struck out three batters, walked none and hit one batter in picking up the win. He also helped his cause by going 2-for-2 at the plate.

After Jena took the lead for good in the bottom of the first inning, the Giants continued to add to their lead. They scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning, two runs in the bottom of the third inning on a double by Parker Tannehill, and two more in the bottom of the fourth.

Wesley Dorton also went 2-for-2 for Jena, which finished with eight hits and was aided by four Block errors.

Kaylin Curry took the loss on the mound for Block. He was the second of three pitchers the Bears used and allowed seven runs, four of them earned, on seven hits, with three strikeouts and one walk.

Block (7-10) returns to LHSAA District 3-1A play at 5 p.m. Monday when the Bears visit Montgomery.

Franklin County 11, Enterprise 6

BUDE — Hoby Mullins lasted into the fifth inning to pick up the win and Bernard Selmon went 2-for-4 to lead Franklin County at the plate as the Bulldogs pulled away late to defeat the Enterprise Yellow Jackets 11-6 Saturday afternoon.

Mullins gave up two runs in the top of the first inning, but Franklin County responded with one run in the bottom of the first inning, two runs in the bottom of the second and one in the bottom of the third to give the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead.

However, Enterprise would not go away that easy. The Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 4-4 before the Bulldogs used a two-run rally in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-4 lead.

The Yellow Jackets eventually chase Mullins from the game with two outs in the top of the fifth inning and Chris Cantrell came on in relief. The visitors scored one run in that frame to make it a 6-5 game, but Cantrell and Derick Brumfield, who pitched the seventh, shut the door on their comeback attempt.

The Bulldogs finally put away the pesky Yellow Jackets by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and one more in the bottom of the sixth. Cantrell pitched one and one-third innings to get the save.

Graham Cowart, Ethan Verdin and Bryce White each had a double for Franklin County (9-6), which returns to MHSAA Region 7-3A play on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for a home game against Hazlehurst.
