NATCHEZ — A celebration of life services for Barry Craig Marshall, 54, of Natchez, who died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, at the University Medical Center in Jackson, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church with the Rev. Makungu Akinyela officiating.

Mr. Marshall was also known as Hodari Askari, his given name during the Black Consciousness Movement in Los Angeles, which means courageous soldier.

Burial will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of Robert D. Mackel and Sons Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.

Mr. Marshall was born Aug. 21, 1956, in Los Angeles, the son of Columbus Marshall and Lena P. Woods Deffebough. He attended the Los Angeles public school system and was a mechanic and a master brake systems expert. He was skilled martial arts, a product of Kupigana Ngumi, the new African combat system.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include one daughter, Akilah Daily and husband, David, of Fontona, Calif.; one brother, Watani Thehimba and wife, Ahadi, of Decatur, Ga.; one sister, Emily Grace Marshall of Shreveport, La.; two granddaughters, Macharia and Jenna Daily; one grandson, Joshua Daily; three aunts, Julia Henry of Natchez, Edna Johnson of Memphis, Tenn., and Jerline Henson of Shreveport; two uncles, Spencer Sylvester and wife, Florida, and Ernest Woods, all of Natchez; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends.
