Girls’ Prep Roundup: Vidalia upends Caldwell

COLUMBIA, La. — Taylor Rodgers threw a complete-game two-hitter with nine strikeouts and Katlyn McCarver drove in three runs as the Vidalia Lady Vikings upended the Caldwell Parish Lady Spartans 7-1 Thursday afternoon in an LHSAA District 3-3A game.
Rodgers, who walked just one batter, pitched five straight scoreless innings to start out the game before giving up one unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning. She was involved in a pitcher’s duel with Caldwell Parish’s Conner Stockstill until Vidalia got to Stockstill in the final two innings.
The Lady Vikings scored one run in the top of the first inning and the score remained at 1-0 until the top of the sixth inning, when Vidalia struck for three runs to take a 4-0 lead and it would add three more runs in the top of the seventh for a 7-1 advantage. Despite allowing 14 hits and walking two over seven innings, Stockstill struck out 10 batters.
Mallory Wheeler went 3-for-4 with two doubles and Katelynn Bertelsen went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in for Vidalia (8-7, 3-3), which takes on St. Frederick at 4 p.m. today and Franklin Parish at 6 p.m. today at the 2014 Vidalia Vikings Softball Classic.
Franklin County 7, Wesson 2
WESSON — Harley McKay allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out seven batters in a complete-game performance as the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs defeated the Wesson Lady Cobras 7-2 Thursday afternoon in an MHSAA Region 7-3A game.
McKay also went 2-for-4 with a triple. In addition to her seven strikeouts, she also walked three batters and hit one batter. The Lady Bulldogs gave up plenty of run support early on with one run in the top of the first inning and four more in the top of the second.
Wesson didn’t get on the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Lady Cobras scored their only two runs of the game. Franklin County answered with two runs of its own in the top of the seventh.
Sierra Bethley went 3-for-4 with two doubles, Macy Brabahm was 2-for-4 with two doubles, and Krislyn Kent was 2-for-4 with one double.
Franklin County (6-6, 2-1) hosts Enterprise at 7 p.m. today.
