NATCHEZ — Enjoy shrimp on the bluff overlooking the Mississippi River or learn about a slave who eventually became a successful businessman and politician this weekend in the Miss-Lou.

Sunny skies are forecast through Friday, but showers could arrive for Saturday and Sunday.

Friday forum 

This week’s topic includes a presentation by local filmmaker Mark Brockway discussing his upcoming documentary “Mississippi Madame,” which documents the life of Nellie Jackson.

The weekly forum begins at 8 a.m. at Natchez Coffee Company.

Junior auxiliary shrimp boil

The Natchez Junior Auxillary will host its annual 5K, 10K and one-mile fun run Saturday followed by a shrimp boil Saturday on the bluff.

JA member Lauren Burns said the events are major fundraisers for the organization and ones the members and the community look forward to each year.

“It’s just a great day for the community to come out, enjoy the weather and have some fun,” Burns said.

Registration for the races will begin at 7:30 a.m., with the 10K race kicking off at 8:30 a.m.

The 5K will begin right after at 8:31 a.m. and the one-mile fun run at 9:30 a.m. for ages 12 and under.

Race-day registration is $35 for the 10K and 5K races and $2 for the fun run.

Tickets to the shrimp boil are $15, which includes one pound of shrimp with corn and potatoes, and can be purchased at the event.

Vidalia cemetery clean up

Members of the Vidalia Cemetery Association will host their annual spring clean up from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Association president Renard Chatman said residents are encouraged to bring tools they have available to help clean up the cemetery.

“They can bring lawnmowers, weed eaters, rakes or anything else they want,” Chatman said. “We’re hoping a lot of people show up and help us get the area clean.”

iPhone class

Residents who want to learn more about their iPhone can attend a free class hosted by Stephen Collins from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Ferriday Library, which is located at 1609 3rd St.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own phone and learn new tips and techniques about the iPhone.

Tales of a Dunleith Duo

A skit portraying the lives of John Roy Lynch and Alfred Vidal Davis will be presented Sunday in three parts between dinner courses crafted by The Castle Restaurant’s culinary team at Dunleith Inn.

The skit depicts the lives of a slave, Lynch, and a slave owner, Davis. One starts his life as a businessman and lawyer and ends in poverty, while the other starts in poverty and becomes a successful businessman and politician.

Dinner includes iced tea, bread service, salad, choice of two entrees — pork tenderloin or redfish — and dessert.

A cash bar will open at 6 p.m., and the dinner and show will begin at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $55 per person and include dinner and the show.

Spring Pilgrimage

The famous Natchez Spring Pilgrimage continues this weekend with 24 historic houses and properties open for tour.

Tickets and maps for the Pilgrimage tours are available at Natchez Pilgrimage Tours, located in the Natchez Visitor Reception Center at 640 S. Canal St. The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Tours feature three houses each with a tour in the morning, 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and in the afternoon, 1:30 to 5 p.m.

Tickets for the three-house tours are $30 per adult and $18 for children ages 6 to 18.

Tickets for the six-house tours are $60 per adult and $36 for children ages 6 to 18.

Tickets for a three-house tour plus a tour of historic Longwood, Rosalie or Stanton Hall are $42 for adults and $26 for children.

Tickets are available only at tour headquarters. No tickets are available for individual houses, which are open only as scheduled during Spring Pilgrimage.
