NATCHEZ — Tuesday night was a night where Cathedral High School could do no wrong on the diamond.
After squeezing by Franklin County earlier this season in a 5-4 affair, the Cathedral Green Wave defeated the Bulldogs 22-2 through three innings in a home contest.
“It’s just one of those nights where everything we did was right,” said Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley. “Thomas (Garrity) had a good night on the mound, and we swung the bats really well tonight.”
Cathedral had 13 hits, and Garrity struck out six in three innings pitched.
“We expected a good game tonight, and we came out swinging the bats,” Beesley said. “We started the game with a leadoff walk and a good bunt down third, and everything just followed in after that.”
Cathedral took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning, before the Green Wave bats caught fire in the bottom of the second and produced 10 runs.
The second inning was highlighted by an inside-the-park home run by Garrity that came as a result of an unfortunate ankle injury by Franklin County outfielder Kade Clanton. Clanton chased the ball in right field and tripped, injuring his ankle and allowing Garrity to cross home plate. Because Clanton never touched the ball, the play was ruled an inside the park home run. Before being pulled and switching to right field, Clanton pitched one and a third of an inning and gave up four runs.
After a nine-run third inning for the Green Wave, the game was called.
Pate Shirley led the Green Wave in hits with two singles and a double. He also had four RBIs. Zac Flattman produced a two-RBI double in the second inning.
Franklin County will immediately get an opportunity for payback with a rematch against Cathedral this Friday at 7 p.m. Beesley knows his team is going to get a revenge-seeking Bulldog team.
“It starts off 0-0 Friday,” Beesley said. “It’s going to be a tough game over there. I know they’re going to be ready to get after us. I know Franklin County and they’re a good ball team. Tonight was just one of those nights where everything went our way.”
