Ben Hillyer / The Natchez Democrat — William Maier and Kayla Maier, both 5, make a donation to Stewpot during Saturday morning’s celebration. Assumption Catholic Church celebrated the Feast of St. Joseph Saturday morning with a traditional St. Joseph Altar decorated with food, candles, flowers and petitions to St. Joseph. The tradition began when Sicilians prayed to St. Joseph to save them from a time of famine and their prayers were answered. In celebration, a St. Joseph altar was made. Canned food and donations to Stewpot were also collected. Any remaining food not eaten during the celebration will be donated to the Stewpot.
