All graduates deserve ‘family’ support

Hello, please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Chantel Marsaw, I am the founder of “It Still Takes a Village To Raise Our  Children.”

I wanted to find a way to give back to my community by helping school children who have at least one deceased parent.

It is my desire to encourage students to be positive, confident and encourage them to succeed despite life’s obstacles.

I want to let them know that the community cares about them and, hopefully, these efforts will encourage them to graduate, instead of dropping out of school.

Last year, I gave the Natchez High School 2013 graduating class 19 plaques.

Among those students were those who had 12 deceased mothers and seven deceased fathers.

The plaques that were presented to the students featured a large bulldog, the Natchez High mascot, at the top followed by the parent’s name and the student’s name.

This year, I am in the process of giving plaques to five schools in my community, both public and private.

I figured if I can help one school, why not reach out to them all in my community.

Thanks to family, friends and other businesses in my community that contributed last year.

I am expanding, and I am in need of more funding. I would love to provide each graduate with a plaque, which will represent the deceased parent’s name, as well as the student.

I also would love to give each student a floral arrangement and a gift card.

In addition, I would love to be able to give laptops, school supplies for college, gas money, among other items.

All donations are accepted and appreciated. The schools included this year will be Adams County Christian School, Cathedral High School, Jefferson County High School, Natchez High School and Trinity High School.
