BOGUE CHITTO — The Cathedral High School Lady Green Wave played well against a good Pelahatchie Attendance Center team in the first half of the girls’ consolation game of the MHSAA Division 7-1A Tournament Saturday afternoon at Bogue Chitto High School.

However, Cathedral’s third-quarter shooting woes that plagued the team this season showed up once again and Pelahatchie took advantage as the Lady Chiefs pulled away for a 69-48 win over the Lady Green Wave.

The No. 4 seed Lady Green Wave matched point for point with the No. 2 seed Lady Chiefs in the first quarter, which ended with the score tied at 14-14. Pelahatchie went into halftime up 29-25, but Cathedral head coach Randy Smith said he was proud of how his team performed in the first half.

“I’m proud of the girls. We hung with (Pelahatchie) in the first half,” Smith said. “We tried to focus on the third quarter, but their press overcame us. The girls tried hard and they did not give up.”

Pelahatchie ended up outscoring Cathedral 18-9 in the momentum-changing third quarter for a 47-34 lead and put the game away with a 22-14 advantage in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Chiefs had four players score in double figures. Brittany Thompson led all scorers with 16 points while Janae Collier and April Ticer had 13 points each, and Taquilla Beemon added 10 points. The Lady Green Wave were led by Elizabeth Smith with 14 points. Caroline Smith scored 11 points, and Mackenzie Watts finished with 10 points.

“It was a great experience for us. We’re looking forward to our first playoff game,” coach Smith said.

Cathedral (13-12) will be the Division 7-1A No. 4 seed in the MHSAA Class 1A South State Playoffs and will play at Division 8-1A No. 1 seed Stringer Monday at a time to be determined.
