NATCHEZ — The Adams County Christian School Rebels soccer team is state championship bound.

With less than 12 minutes potentially left in their season Thursday afternoon, junior Lester Wells connected with a cutting Justin Allgood for what would be the game-winning goal is ACCS’ 2-1 state semi-final soccer game.

The goal broke up a 1-1 deadlock in which the Rebels and Chamberlain-Hunt had been battling in following two quick goals to open the first half.

“I’m super proud of every one of these guys,” ACCS head coach Jimmy Allgood said. “It took a team (to get this far), and they came together today. They earned the right to play for the state championship, and they will have the chance.

“They stepped up to the challenge for themselves and their school.”

It was actually ACCS that was down early following a Chamberlain-Hunt goal, scored when Matt Cormaci kicked the ball high, rolling right off the tips of Rebel goalie Zach Pintard’s fingers.

Pintard, a junior, and the rest of the Rebels defense would make up for the goal the rest of the way, as the defense kept the Wildcats scoreless the remainder of the game.

Allgood said the Rebels defense used a different attack this game, and it proved successful against a talented Wildcat team.

The Rebels tied the game early in the first half when Wells 10 minutes after the Wildcats did.

The goal was Wells’ fourth in his last two playoff games.

Both teams went into the second half with a win on their mind, but the Rebels were the ones who turned their aspirations into reality.

“The last four minutes, our guys attacked,” Jimmy Allgood said. “It seemed we played 90 percent of the second half on our half of the field.”

Coach Allgood said the Rebels went from earning their first district championship earlier this season to a shot at a state title in a short amount of time. He credited his players’ hard work for that championship performance.

“We made history, and we are the south state champions for the first time ever in soccer at ACCS,” Allgood said. “These kids went from worst to first in four short years and it is amazing in my book.”

The Rebels will play in the state championship game Monday, and Allgood said the opponent, time and location are not finalized.
