The many accolades and recognition earned by Miss-Lou residents last week helped thaw us out from the icy conditions brought on by another bout of winter weather.

Before we prepare for the week ahead, let’s take a step back and look at the highlights of last week:

4Several community members were honored at the Natchez Business and Civic League’s annual awards banquet. Among the winners were Jimmy Ware and Quartreate Ware, owners of Sunset View Memorial Park Cemetery, who were named George F. West Man of the Year and Alice Felix Woman of the Year, respectively. We congratulate the business owners on their honors.

4Four 11th-grade students at Cathedral High School traveled to Jackson to compete in the annual Mississippi College Science and Mathematics academic bowl. The group of students won first place in their division by competing against students from across the state in several elimination rounds of academic trivia. The students should be commended for representing Natchez in the competition.

4Trinity Episcopal Day School senior Sarah Rodriguez is one of 15,000 students across the country who advanced from the level of semifinalist to finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Rodriguez will now compete for nearly 8,000 scholarships worth approximately $35 million, which will be announced in March. We wish Rodriguez well as she continues competing in the program.

The Miss-Lou residents who received recognition deserve a round of applause for their achievements, and we hope others follow in their footsteps this week.
