NATCHEZ — Catch up with long-time hunting buddies or learn more about preventing heart disease this weekend in the Miss-Lou.
A variety of indoor and outdoor events are being hosted as rain is forecast until Saturday.
Writer’s guild meeting
The Natchez chapter of the Mississippi Writers Guild will host an open mic night from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Natchez Manor, located at 600 Franklin St.
The event is hosted so area writers can read excerpts from their works.
Published and non-published writers are welcome to attend.
The guild is a non-profit organization sponsoring a variety of literary and educational events around the state.
For more information, call Mark LaFrancis, chapter leader, at 601-442-0980.
Pink Goes Red for a Day
Zeta Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. will sponsor Pink Goes Red for a Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Natchez Mall.
The event is hosted in recognition of the American Heart Association Go Red for Women Day and will include free blood pressure checks, sorority vice president Alma Fletcher said.
“Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the country, so we want to do anything we can to help save lives,” Fletcher said. “It’s known as a silent killer, but some of these things like the blood pressure checks or reading information can help recognize it early on.”
The event is free and open to the public.
Friday forum
This week’s topic includes representatives from the Natchez-Adams School District giving an update on the school district.
The weekly forum begins at 8 a.m. at Natchez Coffee Company.
Concordia NWTF banquet
The Concordia Delta Long Beards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation’s 11th annual fundraising banquet at 6 p.m. Friday at the Vidalia Conference and Convention Center.
The dinner will feature a variety of sponsor tables and include a live auction, silent auction, raffles and more than 20 guns on display for chapter members to see.
The banquet also includes various events for the whole family, NWTF events coordinator Melissa Tarver said.
“This event really isn’t just for hunters. We have something for everybody,” Tarver said. “We really push that everyone bring their wives, their children and just bring the whole family out for the event.”
A lifetime hunting and fishing license will be given to a JAKES — or Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship — member. JAKES is the federation’s membership program for children and teenagers.
Tickets are $50 for single, $65 for a couple and $15 for JAKES.
The event is the group’s largest fundraiser that helps pay for a variety of community events throughout the year, such as the annual Special Access Hunt for wheelchair-dependent hunters.
For more information or to get tickets in advance, call 318-729-8304 or 601-334-2090.
Kitten adoption day
The Natchez-Adams County Humane Society will host a kitten adoption day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Natchez Mall near the theater entrance.
The price of adopting an animal — $35 for two kittens and $25 for one kitten — incudes spaying and neutering costs.
Second Saturday
Shopping, art events, music and refreshments will greet visitors and locals alike downtown Saturday.
The monthly Second Saturday event features a number of shops and galleries that will be open all day with extended hours.
Natchez Art Association
The Natchez Art Association will host the art exhibit “Theater” from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Natchez Art Center, located at 118 N. Pearl St. No. 105.
The association hosts the exhibit each month with a different theme.
The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served at the exhibit.
