Get Yourself Up and Come On Out to see the Natchez version of the Apollo Theater while it still lasts.

The Natchez Festival of Music invites everyone to a free musical open house at Margaret Martin Performing Arts Center from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday. On the main stage will be a combo you will not want to miss — Father Walt and the Funky Friars.

Members of this funky group include Terry Trovato on drums, Father Walton Jones on vocals and keyboards, Jamie Blanton on guitar and vocals, Dr. Bruce Scarborough on guitar, Kenny Jones on guitar, Dr. Robert Sizemore on bass and Ernie Moore on sax, flute, harmonica and conga.

As an added musical treat, The Grape Escape will be open throughout the event where you may purchase beverages and listen to one of Natchez’s favorite and most talented pianists, Burnley Cook.

You may not have had the opportunity to be an extra in the film, “Get On Up,” or even be an observer at the various filming locations; however, everyone is invited to come and see the Natchez “Get On Up”  version of the Apollo Theater.

The former Natchez High School building auditorium was transformed for the production. Over the years, the Natchez Festival of Music patrons and benefactors have made certain that their audiences experience a most enjoyable venue and the best musical productions in the Miss Lou.

Past modifications to the building have included the addition of cushioned seating, beautiful chandeliers, more modern heating and air conditioning in the auditorium.

These additions have not been unlike the massive renovations recently completed at the historical Ford’s Theater in Washington, D. C., where Abraham Lincoln was shot and where concerts and plays are still presented.

The Ford’s Theater auditorium capacity was decreased; a new lobby and new bathroom facilities were added in addition to elevators to aid patrons in accessing all levels for performances.

While the enhancements made to our auditorium are not as extensive, we are pursuing funding to make our diamond in the rough a sparkling gem.

The Natchez Festival of Music would like for everyone to personally experience this Natchez version of the Apollo Theater.

So Get Yourself Up and Come On Out for free fun, musical entertainment and a look at the beautiful auditorium from 4:30 to 7 p.m Saturday.

Tickets for the Valentine’s Gala and Auction in addition to the upcoming May Festival events will be available for purchase.
