NATCHEZ — Adams County will become part of a statewide driving tour aimed at showcasing Mississippi’s prehistoric American Indian history.

The Adams County Board of Supervisors approved Monday a resolution stating the county would be willing to participate in the Mississippi Mound Trail, a self-guided tour of the state’s Indian mounds and earthworks along U.S. 61.

County Engineer Jim Marlow said three sites have been identified in Adams County by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and the Mississippi Department of Transportation for inclusion in the tour, though the county does not yet know where those sites are located.

The stops on the tour would be similar to that of the Mississippi Blues Trail, with interpretative signage and a place for visitors to park.

“I visualize them being something like you have along the Natchez Trace, where you have these pull-off areas at Indian sites there or Loess Bluff,” Marlow said.

The county’s participation in the creation of the tour would be to supply manpower and equipment to develop the tour sites, Marlow said, though MDAH and MDOT would reimburse the county for the materials used in the development.
