MONTEREY — Elizabeth Smith led all players with 11 points and Akua Kumi scored 10 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for Cathedral as the Lady Green Wave defeated the Monterey Lady Wolves 51-27 Friday night.

After the game, Cathedral head coach Randy Smith said several things led his team to the win in its first game in two weeks — a tenacious defense, being more aggressive than the home team and some key contributions from the reserves.

“Good defense won the game. I think we needed it,” coach Smith said. “We knew Monterey was going to be aggressive coming out on their home court. We wanted to be more aggressive.”

And by playing a full-court man-to-man defense for the majority of the game, the Lady Green Wave did just that. They held Monterey under 10 points in three of the four quarters. Cathedral led Monterey 14-6 after one quarter of play and 25-17 at halftime.

The Lady Green Wave outscored the Lady Wolves 11-7 in the third quarter and 15-3 in the fourth.

And it helped that they had nine players reach the scoring column. Mackenzie Watts finished with eight points while McKenzie Milligan and Caroline Smith had six points each. For Monterey, Karlee Woodruff led the way with eight points and Morgan Pecanty had five points.

“The second half, we ran our offense better and we scored better,” coach Smith said. “It was pretty balanced scoring.”

Cathedral (8-3) hosts Bogue Chitto Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a key MHSAA Division 7-1A game. Monterey (10-8) hosts Atlanta (La.) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Hinds AHS 40, Jefferson County 34

FAYETTE — Octavia Barnes and Breannah McCullah did most of the scoring for Hinds Agricultural High School, but it was just enough to propel the Lady Bulldogs to a 40-34 win over the Jefferson County Lady Tigers Friday night at the Jefferson County Holiday Tournament.

Barnes ended up leading all scorers with 18 points and McCullah wasn’t too far behind with 16 points. Jefferson County went toe to toe with the Lady Bulldogs throughout the first three quarters and took a 25-23 lead at the end of the third quarter. However, the Lady Tigers could not contain Hinds AHS’ dynamic duo and ended up being outscored 17-9 in the fourth.

Diamond Smith led the Lady Tigers with 10 points and ReKeijah Williams finished with eight points.

Jefferson County takes on East Feliciana (La.) High School today at 6 p.m. at the Jefferson County Holiday Tournament.

Vidalia 42, Sicily Island 32

SICILY ISLAND — Vidalia jumped out to a 10-0 lead over Sicily Island after one quarter of play. Oddly enough, 10 points turned out to be the margin of victory as the Lady Vikings defeated the Lady Tigers 42-32 Friday night.

Sicily Island tried to rally back after that embarrassing opening quarter and actually outscored Vidalia 16-14 in the second quarter, but still trailed at halftime 24-16. Unfortunately for the Lady Tigers, they could not muster up a big rally in the second half.

Fran Duson led the Lady Vikings with a game-high 11 points while Bre’honor Harris and Taylor Tennessee had eight points each. Kalia Phillips led Sicily Island with 10 points.

Vidalia plays host to Franklin Parish at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Ferriday 51, New Living Word 48

RUSTON, La. — D’Asia Mirchell scored 15 points and ShaKeria Kelly had 14 points as the Ferriday Lady Trojans rallied in the second half to defeat the New Living Word Lady Lions 51-48 Friday night.

Jada Griggs added 11 points for Ferriday, which went into halftime trailing New Living Word 26-23 at halftime before outscoring the Lady Lions 12-7 in the third quarter and 16-15 in the fourth quarter.

Ferriday (4-8) next plays at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Sicily Island.

Amite County 53, Prentiss 40

FAYETTE — Fredricka Smith led a balanced scoring attack for Amite County with a game-high 16 points as the Lady Trojans defeated the Prentiss Lady Bulldogs 53-40 Friday afternoon at the Jefferson County Holiday Tournament.

Cimerial Patterson and Dalhia Taplin scored 10 points each for Amite County, which jumped out to a 15-8 lead over Prentiss after one quarter of play and continued to add to its lead for much of the next three quarters.

Prentiss takes on Hinds Agricultural High School today at 3 p.m.
