The Natchez City Cemetery Association invites you to join us for the 10th anniversary of our annual fundraiser, Angels on the Bluff. Our beautiful City Cemetery will serve as the stage for dramatic vignettes and musical performances that bring to life some of our city’s most interesting residents from years past.
Your evening begins at the Natchez Visitors Reception Center where you will board a bus at your reserved ticket time. At the cemetery gates you will be met by our enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides. They’ll share interesting facts about our historic cemetery as they lead you along candlelit avenues to meet the following fascinating characters:
4Louis Winston and Isaac Hathaway—Mr. Winston, born in 1844, was a free man of color and the son of a prominent planter. A successful attorney who served 20 years as the circuit clerk of Adams County, Mr. Winston was also a Confederate veteran. A bronze bust, sculpted by the artist Isaac Hathaway, marks his grave. Mr. Hathaway was America’s first prominent African American sculptor.
4The Rev. Joseph Buck Stratton — Rev.Stratton served as minister of the First Presbyterian Church from 1843 to 1902 — nearly 60 years! His diary is still read today by researchers and family historians hoping to gain a better understanding of life in Natchez during those early years.
4Hunter Course — Mr. Course met an untimely death at the age of 19 in an “affray” on Main Street. John Randolph Calvert, a descendant of the man who fired the fatal shot, will narrate this tragic story.
4Riverboat Gambler Quartet — Terry Trovato and his ensemble will entertain you on Steamboat Lane near the resting place of Dr. Thomas H. Gandy, conservator of the famous Norman Photograph Collection.
4Clara Lowenburg Moses — This fascinating woman is buried high on Jewish Hill overlooking the Mississippi River. Born into one of the oldest and most prominent Jewish families in Natchez, Clara enjoyed a life of great opportunity yet was not spared by tragedy.
4T. Otis Baker — Mr. Baker was a well-known Natchez attorney. He also served as captain of Company A, Tenth Regiment, Mississippi Infantry, and was wounded in the battles of Shiloh and Atlanta during the Civil War. Mr. Baker was the only man ever to serve as Commander of the United Confederate Veterans of Natchez. Rusty Jenkins will bring this character to life.
4S. Quinn Boothe — Mr. Boothe was the father of one of the five young girls who died in the 1908 explosion at the Natchez Drug Company. Hear his version of the tragedy as you stand before the famous “Turning Angel” erected in memory of these unfortunate women. Veteran actor Sam Jones will captivate you with this tale.
Come join the Natchez City Cemetery Association for a delightful evening of entertainment, from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 6 and 7. It is guaranteed to be an evening you won’t forget.
Tickets are $15 each and must be reserved in advance by calling the Natchez Visitors Reception Center at 601-446-6345. Tickets are selling quickly!
