Dr. Lauretta Moon

Services for Dr. Lauretta Whitehead Moon, 99, of Natchez, who died Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at Natchez Community Hospital, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Chapel AME Church with the Rev. Birdon Mitchell Jr. officiating.

Burial will follow at Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.

Dr. Moon was born July 17, 1907, in Natchez, the daughter of Charlie and Katie Whitehead. She was an only child. She was educated in the public schools of Natchez. She earned a bachelor of science in education from Alcorn State University; a master’s in education from Columbia University Teachers College, of New York City, N.Y., where she also earned her doctorate in education. She was an instructor and worked as an educator in the Natchez Public Schools, Natchez Junior College, Alcorn State University and Tougaloo College High School. She was the recipient of numerous awards and accolades. Dr. Moon was a member of Zion Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Natchez. She held memberships in many professional organizations. As a child, Dr. Moon served as a member of the Young People’s Department and later as a member of the Women’s Missionary Society at Zion Chapel.
