CLINTON — Centreville Academy had just three seniors on its squad this season.

The Tigers made it to the MAIS Class AA state title game this season, and those three seniors — Colby Shaw, Brandon Arnett and Mark Curry — will all get to represent their school once more in the MAIS All-Star game Friday.

Wilkinson County Christian Academy linebacker Tyler Radley joins the three Centreville players on the South squad, and WCCA head coach David Wright is an assistant coach for the South team. Wright replaces former Trinity Episcopal Day School head coach Josh Loy as an assistant. Loy was selected as a coach before being let go by Trinity last week.

For Shaw, making the game was extra-special, since his father, Slade Shaw, made it when he played football.

“I even got my dad’s number, 83,” Shaw said. “When they told me I made it, I got really excited. When they told me my two teammates made it, I got even more excited.”

Shaw said his father told him to have fun, play hard and meet new people. So far, he’s had the chance to do so in the South squad’s practices this week.

“There are a bunch of good athletes, so I feel privileged to be a part of it,” Shaw said. “Going against people better than me has made me better, and I’m learning a lot from them.”

Arnett said it feels good to be able to go against the best players in the state.

“There’s a bunch of good competition out there, but I feel like I can hold my own,” Arnett said.

Like Shaw, Arnett said it was a privilege to get selected as an all-star.

“Not everyone gets to make it, and it’s seniors only, so you only get one shot,” Arnett said. “It feels good.”

Curry said going up against the best players in the MAIS means there’s no slacking off in practice this week.

“If you’re not giving everything you have, they’re going to beat you,” Curry said.

Making the all-star team was a goal Curry set before the season, he said.

“It’s a pretty big accomplishment and a great honor,” he said.

Radley said he never had the all-star game on his mind during the season at WCCA, but like his three Centreville counterparts, he’s grateful for the chance to play one more game.

“There are a lot of good kids here,” Radley said. “I’m really enjoying my time so far. It’s very challenging, and you really go up to a new level when you’re playing kids of such quality.”

It also helps having Wright help coach players, since Radley has played for Wright the past two seasons.

“I’m glad I have a coach here with me so I’m not clueless out here about what’s going on,” Radley said.

Wright said it was his first time to coach in an all-star game, and he’s enjoying the experience.

“It’s been a blast,” Wright said. “It’s an opportunity to coach one more game, and it’s exciting to be around so many good ball players.”

The game will be played at 4 p.m. Friday at Mississippi College’s Robinson-Hale Stadium.
