NATCHEZ — Natchez natives Marvin and Marqueon Minor helped make history at their Zahcary, La., high school on the gridiron this season.

Marvin, 17, and Marqueon, 16, have made their mark at Northeast High School not only as star football players, but also as all around athletes who excel in several other sports.

Marvin, a junior, played running back and linebacker this past season as he led the team with 8 touchdowns, and Marqueon, a sophomore, played quarterback, assisting Marvin with most of those touchdowns.

Marvin said he credits part of his success this season to his weight loss.

“I lost a lot of weight,” Marvin said. “I was 242, and now I’m 225.”

The Minor brothers took their team further than any class ever had before as Marqueon said they made school history.

“We made it to the second round of the playoffs, but lost to Loreauville,” Marqueon said. “It was the furthest Northeast had ever gotten.”

But with football season now over, Marqeon has hit the hardwood as basketball season gave him no time to take a breather.

“I’m in basketball right now, we just lost our last game in overtime,” he said.

Though Marvin and Marqueon have chemistry, Marvin refuses to lace up his shoes and score some points on the basketball court with his brother.

“I can’t play basketball because it’s not physical enough for me,” Marvin said.

So as Marqeon plays basketball this season, Marvin will be patiently waiting for baseball season to come around, but he won’t be sitting around until the spring.

“I’m going to work out and keep myself in shape, because I don’t want to get back to 242 pounds,” he said,

Though the Minor brothers are still at least a year away from graduation, they are already contemplating their future.

The Minor brothers have plans to take their athletic ability to the next level. Marvin said his dream is to play football at Mississippi State University though he is still figuring out what he wants to major in.

Marqueon knows he wants to major in sports medicine so he can become an athletic trainer and stay around his love for sports. Though he has no definite first choice for college, he knows he wants to stay in Louisiana.

Not thinking too far ahead, Marqueon said he has some new goals to reach by next football season.

“I’m going to be playing defense next year because our corner back is graduating and our safety has to move to corner back, so I will be playing safety next year to balance it out,” Marqueon said,

This will prove to be a real challenge for Marqueon as he’s never played defense before.

“I’m going to try to get good at it, but if it doesn’t work out, I’ll tell coach to put someone at that spot that’s a better fit,” he said.

Marvin said he’ll be watching his brother’s basketball games as he waits to reunite with him on the baseball diamond.
