Hicks’ two goals not enough for Cathedral victory

BOVINA — John Ashton Hicks scored both goals for Cathedral’s varsity boys’ soccer team, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Green Wave lost the St. Aloysius Flashes 7-2 Tuesday night in its season opener.
The varsity doubleheader was originally scheduled to take place at St. Aloysius High School in Vicksburg, but Green Wave head coach Dennis Hogue said the games were moved to a field in Bovina in eastern Warren County.
Hicks scored his first goal of the game at the 22nd minute, but Cathedral still trailed St. Aloysius 3-1 at halftime. The Flashes scored four goals in the second half while the Green Wave managed just one — a penalty kick by Hicks at the 69th minute.
“We had a lot of opportunities,” Hogue said. “But we’re a relatively young squad. We have just one senior and one junior. We have eight or nine ninth-graders and four seventh-graders. We’re going to take our licks this season.”
Hogue said that aside from Hicks, Fredrick Sanguinetti had a good game offensively. Defensively, Hogue said that ninth-grader Rudy Nugent played “exceptionally well.”
Cathedral (0-1) begins MHSAA Region 6-1A/2A/3A action on Friday night at 7 p.m. at home against Loyd Star.
