JONESBORO, La. — Scoring was at a premium between the Ferriday Trojans and the Jonesboro-Hodge Tigers in their LHSAA District 2-2A battle Friday night.
The Tigers were so close to taking what would have been a 3-0 win until Rodney Lawson threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to DeVonante Scott with just 1:00 remaining in the ball game to give the Trojans a hard-fought 6-3 win.
It was just another in a series of thrilling, heart-stopping come-from-behind wins for Ferriday, which improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in district play.
“It’s a real big win. It was a well-played ball game on both sides of the ball. They persevered,” Ferriday head coach Freddie Harrison said. “We didn’t come out with the intensity we should have.”
The game remained scoreless until Jonesboro-Hodge junior George Palmer made a 51-yard field goal with 3:00 to go in the third quarter. It appeared if the Tigers’ defense was going make that 3-0 score stand until the Trojans scored their touchdown to escape with the win.
“Jonesboro-Hodge has a lot of tradition. They played hard,” Harrison said. “Our defense played really well tonight. The defense is real stingy. They take pride on stopping the run and they stopped the run tonight.”
Jonesboro-Hodge fell to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in district play.
Huntington 38, Union Christian 12
FARMERVILLE, La. — Huntington junior fullback Kevin Brown and freshman running back Shaq Witherspoon combined for 277 yards and four touchdowns as the Hounds defeated the Lions for their second win of the season.
Brown had 23 carries for 168 yards with three touchdowns. Witherspoon finished with 11 carries for 109 yards and one touchdown. Senior quarterback Jess Dossett scored a touchdown for Huntington (2-7).
“Our backs ran extremely hard. Just a credit to our upperclassmen. Kevin Brown and Jess Dossett pulled us through tonight,” Huntington head coach Chad Harkins said. “Any time you struggle like we have, it’s a very valuable win for us.”
The offensive line deserves a lot of credit for opening up big holes for Brown and Witherspoon to run through against a Union Christian team that is in its very first season of football. The Lions fell to 1-6 overall.
Harkins added that upperclassmen did not want to end the season with just one win. The Hounds finish their season with home games against Wilkinson County Christian Academy and Trinity Episcopal.
Harkins said he was also pleased with the effort on the defensive side of the ball.
“Blaine Fletcher had a big interception that he returned all the way to the 10. Brown had 15 tackles and four for a loss.”
