Roy Kemp

FERRIDAY – Services for Roy Wilfred Kemp, 86, of Monterey, who died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007, at Natchez Community Hospital, will be 2 p.m. today at Young’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Rod Reynolds officiating.
Mr. Kemp was born May 5, 1921, in Lafayette, the son of Riplon Waller Kemp and Edna Brock Kemp. He was an avid sports fan and coached Dixie League baseball for 11 years. He played football, baseball and boxed for Louisiana Tech. He loved music and was a member of a band at age 12 and played all instruments by ear. Mr. Kemp pursued a degree in agriculture at Louisiana Tech serving in ROTC until Army activation. Being activated into service for five years training troops, he attained the rank of captain. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for five more years after active duty.
Mr. Kemp was manager of Marathon Oil Company, a farmer and school bus driver for Concordia Parish. He drove a bus for senior citizen activities in Concordia Parish as well as owned and operated Kemp’s Landing in Monterey. He was a deacon at Monterey Baptist Church and later became a member of the Living Church of God in 1975.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ogden Kemp and Victor Kemp; sisters, Clara Mae Pittard, Geri Woodard, Hilda Garcia and Marie Roberts.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Carolyn Kemp of Monterey; daughters, Kathryn Waldroff and husband, Larry, of Blountstown, Fla. and Gayle Dixon and husband, Grover, of Houston; sons, Ronald Kemp and wife, Bernice, of Maylene, Ala., Ryan Kemp and wife, Jayne, and Sandon Kemp, all of Monterey; sister, Wilkie Hale of West Monroe; 13 grandchildren, Jaycee Moore, David and Matthew Rhodes, Ronald Jr., Heather and Lori Kemp, Audra Ray, Ryan Kemp Jr. and Robert Kemp, Jaquelyn Duncan, Sandon, Wyatt and Micalet Kemp; 10 great-grandchildren, Jenny, Justin, Jessica and Joseph Moore, Miranda Rhodes, Moria Ray, Paige and Josh Fitt, Elizabeth Duncan and Kaylee Kemp.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Sandon Kemp Jr., Ryan Kemp Jr., Wyatt Kemp, David Rhodes, Matt Rhodes, Ronald Kemp Jr. and Robert Kemp.
Honorary pallbearers will be William Walters and Curtis Lambright.
