Centreville to face Oak Forest in tune-up game before playoffs

CENTREVILLE — With the district schedule complete, Centreville Academy will now turn its attention to postseason preparation.

But first, the Tigers (8-1, 4-0) will square off against Mississippi Association of Independent School Class AAA Oak Forest Academy in a game assistant coach Brian Stutzman said will be a good chance for a tune-up before the playoffs.

“We play them every year,” Stutzman said. “It’s kind of developed into a rivalry game. We usually play them earlier in the season, it just happened to be our last game this year.”

Oak Forest (6-3, 3-0) is coming off a 35-12 win against Cathedral School this past Friday, and Stutzman said his Tigers would have to be ready for the Yellow Jackets’ formidable running game. Last week, Oak Forest tallied 391 yards of rushing against the Green Wave.

“They like to run the football,” Stutzman said. “They’ll either run the fullback dive or some speed sweeps, but they’ll find a way. We just have to try to stop them.”

With Oak Forest not being a district opponent, Stutzman said the game will determine two things: bragging rights and power points, which affect postseason seedings.

“We’re treating it as a playoff game, and we’re planning on getting off on the right foot,” Stutzman said.

The Yellow Jackets will provide a good test for the Tigers, which Stutzman said is a dual-edged sword this late in the season.

“You can say it’s helpful or it isn’t (playing a team of this caliber so late),” Stutzman said. “We’re still nursing some injuries, and it would be nice to rest people, but as far as fine-tuning everything, it’s good to play a team that will be good competition. It’s just a warmup coming into the playoffs, and hopefully it will set the right atmosphere for the next few weeks.”

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Friday at Oak Forest.
