NATCHEZ — Students in the Natchez-Adams School District might need to rethink their spring break vacation plans after an error was discovered in the district’s calendar.
The NASD Board of Trustees approved a correction to the 2013-2014 school calendar Thursday after realizing one of the five days allotted for spring break vacation was also a testing date.
The calendar listed March 24 through 28 as vacation days, but March 24 is a scheduled testing date designated by the Mississippi Department of Education. Dates set by the MDE are not flexible.
In order for current contract days to remain the same, an alternate date had to be identified so teachers would not work beyond 187 days.
Adding a date at the end of spring break would put students attending school for 181 days. Mississippi law requires students attend school for a minimum of 180 days.
The board agreed to designate March 24 as a regular school day — rescheduling spring break to run from March 25 through 28.
President’s Day, which is Feb. 17, was added to the calendar as a school holiday.
