NATCHEZ — A 93-year-old Adams County woman was killed when she was struck by a truck on Providence Road in Adams County Sunday night.
Alice Mock was pronounced dead at the scene, Adams County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Maj. Ricky Stevens said.
Mock was struck by a Ford truck with an Adams County license plate.
“She was walking down the road on the edge of the road,” Stevens said. “When the gentleman came around the corner, the headlights of an oncoming car were in his eyes. He said by the time he saw her he had already hit her.
“He was an older gentleman as well.”
Sheriff’s dispatchers received the call from 911 operators at the Natchez Police Department at 7:08 p.m. Ambulance crews were first to arrive at the scene.
“As soon as the driver hit her he stopped,” Stevens said.
“He had neighbors call 911 because he was too shaken up.”
Mock lived on Providence Road and had been a resident of the area for many years.
Neighbor Sherry Myles said she was an unassuming person who was kind to everyone.
“She was a quiet lady,” Myles said. “She’s lived here my entire life and before that. Everyone who lived here knows her.”
Myles said Mock did not drive, and it wasn’t uncommon for her to walk down the road during the day.
“Her husband died just a few months ago,” Myles said. “Before that he would drive here anywhere she needed to go, but she didn’t drive herself.”
Stevens said Mock’s next of kin is a niece in California.
“(The niece) tried to get her to move out to California,” Stevens said “But she said ‘No, I’m staying here.’”
Myles said that while no close family members live in Adams County there are other relatives in the area and plenty of friends who considered Mock family.
“If you grew up out here, you were family,” Myles said. “When you live somewhere your entire life, everyone is family to you. This is a horrible tragedy. It is a sad, sad day.”
Stevens said he does not expect any charges to be filed against the driver of the truck.
“This was just a tragic accident,” he said.
