NATCHEZ — Going into Friday’s game against Glenbrook School, Adams County Christian School was expecting a defensive battle.

Instead, the Rebels and the Apaches got into a shootout, with ACCS coming out on top 70-48.

“If you’re a PlayStation guru or you don’t know much football, it was probably an exciting game,” Rebels head coach David King said afterward. “But as a coach, we have some work to do in the defensive backfield. I was pleased with our offense. We made some strides in certain areas, but we took some steps back in other ones.”

ACCS amassed 460 yards on the ground, led by Lester Wells and Torrey Smith. Wells had 157 yards and two touchdowns on six carries, and Smith tallied 160 yards and two touchdowns on 14 attempts.

“All of our backs were fresh running the football, and I was pleased with how they all ran hard,” King said. “Several guys scored, and we did just enough in the passing game to keep guys out of the box. We did what we had to do to win, but there were a lot of breakdowns we have to correct.”

Smith got things started for ACCS by scoring on a 5-yard run with 8:10 left in the first. Lester Wells added a 55-yard touchdown reception from Tyler Stockstill with 5:29 left, and Brandon Ross caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Stockstill with 1:55 remaining in the first.

The second quarter saw the Rebels score five times, with Wells scoring on runs of 35 and 62 yards and Carlos Woods scoring on a 50-yard run. Smith had a 7-yard touchdown run as well, and the Rebels got a safety with 1:47 before the half when the punter ran out of the back of the end zone.

In the third quarter, Sam Butler got a defensive touchdown after scooping up a fumble and running 30 yards for the score. Chisum Mardis added a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:38 remaining in the third.

ACCS scored one more time in the fourth quarter when Young got a touchdown on a 6-yard carry with 3:06 remaining.

In addition to his strong night rushing the ball, Wells also had four receptions for 117 yards and a touchdown. Stockstill finished the game 9 of 10 in passing for 158 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Ross had 13 tackles, two assists, one pass deflection and one interception. Matthew Rymer added 13 tackles, one assist and one sack. Wyatt Franks finished with three tackles, two of which were sacks.

ACCS (6-1, 1-0) will play at Amite School Center next week.
