NATCHEZ — Trinity Episcopal Day School and Wilkinson County Christian Academy may have gotten off to different starts to their seasons, but for right now, only one game matters.

When the Rams and Saints square off Friday night in Woodville, both teams will be looking to move to 2-0 in Mississippi Association of Independent Schools District 4-A.

Trinity is undefeated at 6-0, while WCCA struggled out of the gate to a 2-4 start, but Saints head coach Josh Loy said he’s not taking the Rams lightly.

“Up front, they’re probably bigger than anyone we’ve played,” Loy said. “The have some athletes that are comparable to Cenla (Christian Academy), so they definitely have our full attention.”

Rams head coach David Wright said he knows his team has a daunting task against a Trinity team that’s averaging 50 points per game and has shut out its last three opponents.

“They sure are very talented,” Wright said. “They’re very athletic, and Coach Loy is putting kids in the right spots, and they’re making plays. I’ve been very impressed with their quarterback play (from Michael Whitley). He sets the tone for the team.”

Loy said the Rams will bring a strong ground game to the table, and wide receiver Dra Tolliver presents a challenge for his defense.

“They’re a fairly balanced team, and they have a good running back,” Loy said. “They’ll run power, sweeps and play action, and Dra Tolliver definitely poses a threat to us.”

Setting the tone early has worked for the Saints so far, and Loy said it would have to happen again Friday against a good Rams squad.

“Getting off to a good start and taking people out of the game (is key),” Loy said. “We feel good about our chances if our defense continues to force turnovers the way they have been the last few games.”

Wright, by contrast, said just about everything would have to go right in order for his team to come out on top.

“We have to play a perfect game,” Wright said. “They make other teams they’ve played miss tackles and get misaligned. There are no room for errors — our backs are against the wall.”

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Friday.
