FERRIDAY — One Ferriday native was sentenced to life in prison and another to more than 22 years in prison in connection to a drug case that involved distribution of two pounds of pure methamphetamine.

Maurice T. Smith, 32, and Chavo T. Thomas, 30, were sentenced by U.S. District Judge Dee D. Drell Friday in Federal Court in Alexandria.

The two were found to have conspired to deliver methamphetamine from California to Ferriday.

Smith organized the trip, and Thomas traveled to California to purchase and bring back the drugs. Thomas was arrested on Oct. 28, 2011, at a Brookhaven train station with two pounds of pure methamphetamine, and Smith was later arrested in Ferriday. A jury found the defendants guilty on May 31.

Smith and Thomas were arrested as part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Operation dubbed “Delta Blues.”

The task force involved federal and state law enforcement agencies as well as local officials, such as the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office.
