Woodville — Wilkinson County High School (4-1) are hoping to rain on Greenwood High School’s parade today as they face the Bulldogs in their homecoming game.

After a shutout win against South Plaquemines last week, head coach Kenneth Brown discovered that his team was able to make game-time adjustments.

“We found a way to figure out what they were doing and made adjustments to win,” he said.

Brown has been focusing on his offense considerably this week, as the Wildcats get ready to play a Class 5A team in Greenwood.

“We must work on ourselves, our schemes need improving and our offensive line needs to come together and do what they need to do,” Brown said. “We have to learn how to make plays.”

Brown said he hopes the Bulldogs’ festivities become more of a distraction than motivation.

“The main thing is, it’s their homecoming and I hope its more of a distraction for them,” he said. “They have numbers on us so our guys have to play.”

“To be successful on the road against a 5A team would be a plus for us. It would put us in the direction we need to be in before district starts.”

Wilkinson County heads to Greenwood at 7 p.m. today.

Jefferson County High School

Fayette — Jefferson County High School (1-2) head coach James Herrington said he hopes his team isn’t rusty after going two straight weeks without playing a full game.

Last week’s game against McLaurin High School was canceled after the first quarter for weather conditions, and the week before was open for the Tigers. Herrington said he hopes more positives than negatives come from the lack of play.

“There was not a lot we could do about the situation,” Herrington said. “(Since then), we’ve had some good practices and we were able to get healthier.”

Herrington said he is happy to give running back Arthur Norton time to recover from a high ankle sprain to play against South Delta High School today.

Two weeks of practice was not a waste for Jefferson County as Herrington said their preparation for McLaurin is similar to their preparation for South Delta.

“We were practicing for McLaurin last week and South Delta is a 4-4 defensive team just like them,” he said.

Herrington said bitter feelings haunt him when it’s time to play South Delta after be unable to finish the deal against them two years straight.

“I’m familiar with playing them the past two years in a row and being up 14-0 then losing in the fourth quarter,” Herrington said. “So we’re looking to put them away after that, and I hope my players take the same mentality that I have.”

Jefferson County will host South Delta at 7 p.m. today.

Franklin County High School

MEadville — With an open date this week, Franklin County High School (3-2) is already preparing for a big game next Friday against Wilkinson County High School.

“We have an open date this week, but we’ve been working on Wilkinson County for next week,” head coach Chris Calcote said. “We’ve been working hard on our running game and our passing game.”

Calcote said he expects a tough game against an athletic team, and his players must stay focused in order to snag a win.

“It’s going to be a big challenge for us,” Calcote said. “They have some great athletes at quarterback and wide receiver, it’ll be hard to contain those guys.”

Calcote said he is looking at running back Benard Selmon to continue being an offensive threat for the Bulldogs after rushing 180 yards for them against South Pike.

Calcote said the matchup would be vital to their district season.

“It’s an important contest, and it’ll be our first district game,” he said. “If we play hard, we’ll have a chance.”

Franklin County has an open date, but will play Wilkinson County at 7 p.m. next Friday.
