Trinity preview: Saints look to be ‘unselfish’

NATCHEZ — Playing for an undefeated team with multiple scoring threats means a lot of recognition, but it also means a lot of unselfishness, according to one local coach.
At Trinity Episcopal Day School (3-0, 1-0), head coach Josh Loy said the word “unselfish” must register with his players, because his team’s offense features several running and passing threats under starting quarterback Michael Whitley.
“The more options you have, the harder it is to for a team to defend you,” Loy said. “We have a lot of guys that can handle the ball.
Having the depth chart Loy possesses is a treasure, but he said his players must understand what comes along with a stacked roster.
“There’s only one ball to go around, but we have some unselfish players on this team,” he said. “We tell everybody you may only get the ball a few times, so when you get the opportunity, you have to make the most of it.”
Loy said his team understands his offensive schemes as they strive to stay undefeated against Prairie View Academy.
“I would like us to do better with blocking down the field,” he said. “I really like our offensive line; they’ve been improving. I feel like they can get better as we play, but they have a chance to be really special.”
Better blocking can only make things easier for Trinity’s high-scoring offense, and Loy said Whitley must continue to be well protected in the pocket.
Whitley threw 9-for-10 with 128 yards in passing and added 22 yards and a touchdown in his running game last week.
“Whitley is playing well, and he’s not turning the ball over,” Loy said.
Defensively, Loy said they must prepare for a run-first Prairie View team.
“They like to run the football right at you,” he said. “They don’t throw the ball a lot, so we have to be ready for another AA opponent.”
Trinity held Porter’s Chapel to minus 6 yards in their running game last week, and Loy said they must continue to bring that type of intensity to the field.
Though Prairie View isn’t a district game, Loy said they’d prepare for each team with the same amount of importance and focus on themselves first.
“We have to continue to perfect what we’re doing against them,” Loy said.
Trinity will head to Bastrop, La., to take on Prairie View at 7 p.m. Friday.
