NATCHEZ — Four-legged friends will take over the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians and high school band members will occupy Natchez High School this weekend.

Weather forecasts indicate a chance of showers and thunderstorms for the majority of the weekend, but despite the possible rain, the Miss-Lou is filled with weekend activities.

Bark in the Park

The annual Natchez-Adams County Humane Society fundraiser will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Grand Village.

The event is the largest fundraiser for the NACHS and includes contests, raffles, concessions and T-shirt sales.

Some of the most highly anticipated parts of the Bark in the Park are the contests, which include:

• Cutest puppy (6 weeks to four months)

• Most handsome male

• Most beautiful female

• Best owner look-alike

• Most talented

• Best dressed

• Best smile

• Best tail wag

• Mr. and Miss NACHS

All of the contests are subjective and up to the judges.

The only contests with qualifications are Mr. and Miss NACHS, which require the entrants to be adopted from the NACHS shelter.

Entry for each contest is $2 per dog.

Animals will also be available for adoption at Bark in the Park, but must still be spayed or neutered before leaving the shelter.

NACHS President Kathy Fitch said the shelter has been fortunate in previous years to have avoided bad weather interfering with the event.

“We have not been rained out in the time I’ve been here,” Fitch said. “If we do end up with severe weather, we’ll have to cancel because it is an outdoor event.

“We’re just going to hope for the best.”

 Battle of the Bands

High school band members from Mississippi and Louisiana will join Morgantown Middle and Natchez High schools Saturday evening for the Natchez High School battle of the bands competition.

NHS will host the bands at 7 p.m. at Tom F. Williams Memorial Stadium.

“It’s always good to support our band students, because they’ve been working really hard for this special day,” Morgantown Middle School band director Kendra Jenkins said. “The football teams get their days with games, but this is the day just for the bands.”

Admission is $7.

Brits on the Bluff

Mississippi’s English Motoring Club will host a British car show on the bluff from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

More than 60 types of vintage British vehicles including MGs, Triumphs, Austin-Healeys and Jaguars will be on display near Rosalie.

The show is free and open to the public.

Friday Forum

This week’s speakers include representatives from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office who will talk to residents about a variety of topics, Sheriff Chuck Mayfield said.

“We’ll talk about the jail and what we’re doing with the problems we’re having there and a few other things,” Mayfield said. “We’ll try and get people signed up for the neighborhood watch and just let them know about some improvements we have going on.”

 Friday football

Adams County Christian School will host CENLA Christian and Vidalia High School will host Ferriday High School.

Both games begin at 7 p.m.

ACCS will honor veterans and military Friday at its annual Military Appreciation Night at Bobby Marks Stadium.

Prior to the game, veterans will be honored for their service. In addition, a motorcycle tribute will be given, as well as other patriotic activities.

Veterans are invited to a light refreshment reception beginning at 5 p.m. near the stadium.
